Niek Potgieter, professionally known as Nic Potgieter was a legendary South African concertina player and musician revered in Afrikaans folk music. He led the orchestra Die Velvytones, winning the 1964 Sarie Music Award for best Boereorkes (South African Folk Music Orchestra). Potgieter released numerous instrumental albums, often featuring concertina-led melodies rich in lively Afrikaans folk dance tunes and nostalgic themes, produced under labels such as Juweel, Perel, Pret, Columbia/EMI, and MFP.His discography includes notable records such as singles "Haart Van Staal" / "Daar’s ‘N Wind Wat Waai" and "Meadowlands" / "Gesteelde Uurtjies" (both 1962, Juweel), instrumental guitar albums like "Romantiese Ghitaar" and "Geliefde Ghitaar" (Perel), and vocal-accompanied albums including “Padlangs” (Perel 102) with Piet Pompies, and “Niek Potgieter en sy Orkes” (Perel PLS 7018) featuring Chris Strydom. The album "Die Heel Beste Konsertina Album In Die Wereld" exemplifies his concertina mastery. His orchestra members included Flippie Van Vuuren (Accordion), Johnny Van (Guitar), Gerry de Vos (Violin Bass), and Teddy Bowles (Drums), creating a full, melodic sound that was both danceable and expressive.
